Russia Set to Dispatch Oil, Fuel Aid to Cuba
The move comes as Cuban authorities struggle with critical shortages of fuel that have disrupted daily life and transport on the Caribbean nation.
According to the embassy, a delivery of these energy supplies is anticipated “in the near future,” and it described the aid as a humanitarian gesture aimed at easing the pressure caused by the deepening fuel shortfall.
The embassy also noted that it is in regular communication with Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, and Cuban aviation officials to coordinate the safe return of Russian citizens.
Aeroflot has confirmed plans to run special repatriation flights from Varadero and Havana back to Moscow, ensuring Russian nationals can return home amid the crisis.
Simultaneously, Russian authorities have advised their citizens to postpone travel to Cuba and have encouraged travel agencies to halt the sale of new tours due to what officials describe as an “extraordinary situation with fuel supply.”
The severe fuel shortages in Cuba have been exacerbated by the recent capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by U.S. forces on January 3 and subsequent restrictions that have prevented Venezuela, once a major oil supplier to Cuba, from sending energy exports to the island. This disruption has intensified Cuba’s existing energy woes.
