Russia Confirms Continued Oil Supplies to Cuba
“Russian oil has been supplied to Cuba on numerous occasions in recent years. We expect this practice to continue,” Viktor Koronelli said in an interview with Russian state media.
The comments come after US President Donald Trump last month signed an executive order declaring a “national emergency” and outlining plans to impose tariffs on goods from countries supplying oil to Cuba.
Following the US capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Jan. 3, Trump has suggested that Cuba could soon face serious shortages as it loses vital financial and energy support previously provided by Venezuela. He also noted that discussions with Cuban leadership are ongoing.
In response to Washington’s measures, Russia denounced unilateral sanctions against sovereign nations as “categorically unacceptable.”
“We strongly condemn the illegitimate prohibitive measures against Havana and the pressure on the Cuban leadership and citizens,” said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
She added that Moscow is confident Cuba will maintain effective international economic relations “despite the external obstacles to its development.”
