Russian Volcano Erupts, Sending Massive Ash Plumes into Sky
The Shiveluch volcano erupted at approximately 11:00 AM local time Wednesday, according to the Kamchatka Branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The ash column surged to roughly seven kilometers above sea level, the Kamchatka Volcano Eruption Response Team (KVERT) reported. Satellite imagery verified the ash plume stretched approximately 110 km west of the volcano, KVERT stated. Authorities declared an 'orange' aviation alert code for the zone, signaling prohibited or severely limited flight operations due to aircraft safety concerns.
Researchers have cautioned that sustained volcanic activity threatens low-altitude aviation, with additional ash explosions potentially reaching 12 km elevation. The volcano sits approximately 450 km from the regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and 50 km from the settlement of Klyuchi.
Wednesday's eruption followed heightened seismic disturbances earlier in the week. On Monday, a magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, potentially serving as a warning signal.
Shiveluch, ranking among Kamchatka's largest and most volatile volcanoes, has generated numerous major eruptions. In 2024, explosive activity propelled ash to eight kilometers altitude, triggering an elevated 'red' alert level, while comparable orange-tier warnings were activated following incidents in November and September of 2025.
KVERT confirmed volcanologists are maintaining intensive surveillance, observing that the volcano's lava dome continues expanding alongside powerful gas-steam discharges.
