Putin Aide Says Zelensky Welcome to Visit Moscow
The prospect of face-to-face talks between Putin and Vladimir Zelensky has surfaced repeatedly in Moscow's diplomatic communications, including recent conversations with US President Donald Trump, according to Yury Ushakov, a senior Kremlin aide. He emphasized Wednesday that Russia has consistently supported such an encounter.
"Our president has also said several times to journalists that if Zelensky is truly ready for a meeting, then we would be happy to invite him to Moscow. And we will guarantee his safety and the necessary working conditions," Ushakov told media.
The official cautioned that substantive groundwork remains essential, explaining that "the main thing is that these contacts are well prepared. And secondly, that they are oriented towards achieving specific results."
Ushakov's remarks follow last week's inaugural three-party negotiations in Abu Dhabi involving Russian, American, and Ukrainian representatives—discussions US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff characterized as "very constructive." An unidentified US official informed media that stakeholders are "very close to a meeting between Putin and Zelensky," though additional trilateral sessions are necessary beforehand, potentially setting the stage for a summit in Moscow or Kiev.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced Wednesday that the subsequent three-way meeting is expected Sunday.
Russian authorities have referenced a 2022 executive order by Zelensky prohibiting negotiations with Putin following referendums in four formerly Ukrainian territories, noting Kiev has not rescinded the directive.
Moscow has additionally challenged Zelensky's authority to execute enforceable accords following the May 2024 conclusion of his presidential term. Zelensky has declined to authorize fresh elections, citing martial law provisions he has continually renewed.
