Russian strikes leave thousands in Kyiv without heating

(MENAFN) Ukrainian authorities say overnight Russian strikes on Kyiv leave large parts of the capital without heating, deepening an ongoing energy emergency declared last week.

According to official statements, the attacks disrupt heat supplies to thousands of residential buildings across the city. Kyiv’s mayor reports that 5,635 high-rise buildings lose access to heating following the strikes, and one person is injured in the Dniprovskyi district.

"Almost 80% of them are buildings where the heat supply had been restored since Jan. 9," the mayor says, adding that the city’s left bank also remains without water as a result of the damage.

He says repair teams from energy and municipal services are working to restore heating, electricity, and water. He adds that as of Monday evening, 16 out of roughly 6,000 buildings affected by an earlier Jan. 9 attack are still without heating.

Outside the capital, regional officials say one person is killed in the Bucha district of the Kyiv region.

In remarks shared on a US-based social media platform, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says several other regions — including Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, and Sumy — are also hit by the overnight strikes.

"The day before this strike, we finally received the necessary missiles, which helped significantly. Every support package matters. Missiles for Patriots, NASAMS, and other air defense systems are critically needed," Zelenskyy says.

He adds, "The direct task of our entire diplomatic system is to ensure that Ukraine has sufficient air defense capabilities. And partners must not fail to deliver on this – air defense missiles are real protection for human life," while also ordering faster electricity imports to stabilize the situation.
