Zelenskyy Says US Defense Aid Critical to Resisting Russia’s Invasion

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a blunt assessment of Ukraine’s war outlook, stressing that continued US military assistance is critical to resisting Russia’s invasion. Speaking in an interview aired Monday, Zelenskyy said American support—particularly air defense systems—remains indispensable.

“Can we win without American support? No," he said.

"Without American support, we can't defend the sky. Even now, it's very difficult. But American support with missiles for air defense is really helpful and strong in any case."

The comments followed Zelenskyy’s Sunday meeting in Florida with US President Donald Trump, where the two discussed the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia and prospects for the country’s future.

After the talks, Trump told reporters he had also spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin about Ukraine’s post-war recovery, saying Moscow was prepared to assist. Trump said Russia would help, "including supplying energy, electricity and other things at very low prices."

"Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed. President Putin was very generous in his feeling toward Ukraine succeeding," Trump said.

Zelenskyy pushed back forcefully against that characterization, underscoring his lack of trust in Moscow and its leader. “I don't trust Russians…I don't trust Putin, and he doesn't want success for Ukraine.”

"Really, he doesn't want (it). I believe that he can say such words to President Trump. I believe in it, that he can say it, but it's not true...He can say that 'I want a successful Ukraine, and I'm ready to give them cheap electricity’...It's not about energy. We don't need anything from them," Zelenskyy said.

When asked about Russia’s potential involvement in rebuilding Ukraine after the war, Zelenskyy said reconstruction would only be possible if Moscow provided financial compensation for the destruction it caused. “They have to give us money…and we will rebuild everything what we need to rebuild.”
