Russia describes US blockade on Venezuela as "a real act of aggression"
Speaking at an emergency UN Security Council session, Nebenzia said the US “total and complete blockade” of sanctioned oil tankers entering or leaving Venezuelan waters aims to exert “military, political and economic pressure, with the aim of changing an inconvenient regime for the United States.”
He added, “The illegal US blockade on the coast of Venezuela is the most clear and absolutely real act of aggression, and the responsibility of Washington is also evident for the catastrophic consequences of such cowboy-like conduct for the residents of the country, which is now blockaded.”
Nebenzia further warned that the US intervention could serve “as a template for future acts of force against Latin American states.” He criticized Washington’s approach, asserting that the US only respects other countries’ independence if they align their policies with American interests.
The remarks come after US President Donald Trump declared an oil blockade last week, with US forces seizing at least two tankers departing Venezuela. Trump stated that Washington would be “keeping it” along with its cargo.
Venezuela has condemned the US actions as “international piracy,” while the United States maintains that the blockade is intended to combat corruption and drug trafficking. Caracas, however, alleges that Washington is using these efforts as a pretext to remove President Nicolas Maduro and seize control of the country’s oil resources.
