Russian Envoy Arrives in U.S. for Updates on Ukraine Peace Talks

(MENAFN) Top Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev has arrived in the United States to gather current intelligence on Western stances regarding Ukraine peace negotiations, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced. The diplomat will present a full debriefing to Russian President Vladimir Putin once he returns to Moscow.

A 28-point peace proposal developed by US President Donald Trump's administration leaked to media outlets last month, sparking frenzied diplomatic activity among American, European Union, Russian, and Ukrainian officials.

The original framework reportedly called for Kiev to surrender territorial claims over Russia's Donbass region, abandon NATO membership pursuits, and accept restrictions on armed forces capacity, among other essential provisions.

Ukraine and its European supporters have since pushed alternative stipulations in what appears to be an effort to dilute the original document. Moscow has vowed to maintain its non-negotiable positions.

Addressing journalists Sunday in the United States, Dmitriev stated that parties attempting to extend the Ukraine conflict have failed to obstruct discussions with Trump's team.

Kremlin spokesman Peskov declared Sunday that Dmitriev will "receive information on what the Americans and the Europeans have worked out" before delivering his assessment to Putin.

Putin's foreign policy adviser, Yury Ushakov, informed journalist Pavel Zarubin on Sunday that Moscow will scrutinize the Western position to determine "what can be accepted and what categorically cannot be accepted."

"Most of the proposals [put forward by Kiev and its European backers], of course, do not suit us," the official added. Ushakov emphasized Russia will uphold the agreement forged between Putin and Trump during their Anchorage summit in August.

During his year-end live Q&A session Friday, Putin affirmed Russia is "ready both for negotiations and for ending the conflict through peaceful means."

"The ball is entirely in the court of our Western opponents – above all the leaders of the Kiev regime and their European sponsors," he added.
