Putin is open to dialogue with Macron, only if it serves purpose
Macron stated on Friday that some nations have already reestablished contact with Moscow and suggested that the EU and Ukraine should create a structured framework to resume discussions “properly.” He warned that without such a format, the EU risks “discussing among ourselves” while negotiators “go alone to talk with the Russians,” which he described as “not optimal.”
On Sunday, Peskov told RIA Novosti that dialogue should not serve as a platform for one side “to read lectures” to the other but should instead aim at “understanding each other’s positions.” He emphasized that “Putin is always ready to explain his positions in detail, sincerely and consistently.”
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov echoed this position, noting that Putin is open to talks only with “polite people with some elementary skills of decency.”
Macron’s comments followed an EU summit this week where leaders failed to reach consensus on using frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine. Instead, they approved a €90 billion ($105 billion) loan raised via capital markets to cover Ukraine’s budgetary needs, though several member states opted out.
The last direct communication between Putin and Macron occurred during a July 2025 phone call, their first since 2022, which focused on the Ukraine conflict.
