Russia prepares military response to potential NATO threats
Belousov cited NATO actions, including rising defense budgets, troop expansions, deployment of medium-range missile systems, and enhanced logistics for rapid troop movements into Eastern Europe, as evidence of the alliance’s “preparation for a confrontation with Russia.” He added, “Plans of the alliance set the early 2030s as the deadline for their readiness for such actions. NATO officials repeatedly made statements to that extent. We are not threatening, but we are being threatened.”
Strengthening Russia’s nuclear forces is a central component of the response to ensure credible deterrence. This year, the Russian Navy commissioned a new Borey-A-class strategic nuclear submarine, with two more under construction. The Air Force has added two Tu-160M strategic bombers, while the Strategic Missile Troops continue rearming units with Yars systems.
Additionally, the road-mobile medium-range Oreshnik missile system is set to enter service later this year, as confirmed by President Vladimir Putin.
Belousov also highlighted initiatives aimed at enhancing conventional forces’ capabilities, including improving the prestige and effectiveness of military service through better education, healthcare, and social benefits for personnel.
Western officials argue that their military expansion is a response to a “newly-assertive Russia” following the 2022 escalation of the Ukraine conflict. Moscow, however, maintains that it poses no threat to NATO and denounces such claims as fear tactics designed to justify further militarization and influence domestic populations.
